What is Goose AI Agent?
Goose is a general-purpose, open source AI agent that runs natively on your machine. It is designed to handle a wide range of tasks beyond coding, including research, writing, automation, data analysis, and more. Goose provides three interfaces: a native desktop app for macOS, Linux, and Windows; a full CLI for terminal workflows; and an API to embed the agent anywhere. Built in Rust, it offers high performance and portability.
One of Goose's standout features is its extensive integration ecosystem. It connects to over 70 extensions via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for linking AI agents to tools and data sources. These extensions include databases, APIs, browsers, GitHub, Google Drive, and more. Users can also add community skills or build their own. Goose works with 15+ AI providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Ollama, OpenRouter, Azure, and Bedrock. You can use API keys or leverage existing subscriptions like Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini via the Agent Communication Protocol (ACP).
Goose supports parallel task execution through independent subagents, allowing you to handle code review, research, and file processing simultaneously while keeping the main conversation clean. It also includes robust safety features: prompt injection detection, tool permission controls, sandbox mode, and an adversary reviewer that monitors for unsafe actions.
Workflows can be captured as portable YAML configs, which can be shared with teams, run in CI, and include instructions, extensions, parameters, and subrecipes. Extensions can render interactive UIs directly within Goose Desktop, enabling buttons, forms, and visualizations for building agent-powered tools.
