What is MDMA?
MDMA (Markdown-Driven Modular Architecture) is an open-source generative UI framework that extends Markdown with interactive components defined in fenced ```mdma blocks. Instead of returning free-form text or brittle JSON, an LLM outputs structured, validated, renderable UI elements such as forms, tables, approval gates, and charts. This approach dramatically reduces token costs because MDMA runs reliably on small, cheap models like Gemini Flash and Claude Haiku, which often mangle strict JSON. The framework consists of four small packages that transform a Markdown file into a live, stateful interface: a Remark plugin converts Markdown to MDMA AST; a static analysis tool provides lint rules and auto-fix; a state management library handles bindings, audit logs, and policies; and React components render every block type. MDMA defines nine interactive component types: form (with typed fields, validation, and sensitive flags), button (with optional confirm dialogs), tasklist (with required items and onComplete), table (with sortable columns over structured rows), callout (info/warning/error notices), approval-gate (role-based sign-off), webhook (outbound calls on events), chart (line/bar visualizations from inline data), and thinking (render reasoning traces). Use cases include contact forms, sortable data tables, onboarding checklists, and approval workflows. For example, an LLM asked to collect contact details without MDMA returns prose that must be parsed manually; with MDMA, it returns a validated form block that renders instantly. The spec uses forgiving YAML syntax that small models emit reliably, backed by a deterministic validator and an LLM fixer that corrects minor errors. MDMA is developed by Mobile Reality and is available at the MDMA Agent demo. It is ideal for developers building LLM-powered UIs who need cost-effective, robust, and interactive outputs without sacrificing reliability.
