What is Pi.dev?
Pi.dev is a minimal yet powerful terminal-based coding agent designed to adapt to your workflows, not the other way around. With a philosophy of customization and extensibility, Pi allows you to tailor every aspect of its behavior through extensions, skills, prompt templates, and themes. These components can be bundled as Pi packages and shared via npm or git, enabling a community-driven ecosystem of enhancements. Pi ships with powerful defaults but intentionally omits features like sub-agents and plan mode to maintain simplicity and focus. It operates in four modes: interactive, print/JSON, RPC, and SDK, providing flexibility for various use cases from direct terminal interaction to programmatic integration. A real-world example of such integration is OpenClaw. One of Pi's standout features is its ability to modify itself on the fly. You can ask Pi to build a new command, tool, provider, workflow, or UI tweak, and it will customize itself in place. After changes, simply hit reload and continue working. This self-modifying capability makes Pi incredibly adaptable to evolving needs. Pi supports a wide range of AI providers including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure, Bedrock, Mistral, Groq, Cerebras, xAI, Hugging Face, Kimi For Coding, MiniMax, NVIDIA, OpenRouter, Ollama, and more. Authentication is handled via API keys or OAuth, and you can switch models mid-session with /model or Ctrl+L, or cycle through favorites with Ctrl+P. Custom providers and models can be added via models.json or extensions. Session management in Pi is tree-based. Use /tree to navigate to any previous point and continue from there, with all branches stored in a single file. You can filter messages by type, label entries as bookmarks, export sessions to HTML with /export, or upload to a GitHub gist with /share for a shareable rendered URL. Pi's minimal system prompt and extensibility enable true context engineering. Control what goes into the context window and how it's managed. Project instructions can be loaded from AGENTS.md files at startup, and SYSTEM.md allows per-project system prompt customization. Compaction automatically summarizes older messages when approaching the context limit, and is fully customizable via extensions for topic-based compaction or code-aware summaries. Pi.dev is ideal.
