What is Streamdown?
Streamdown is a markdown renderer specifically designed for streaming content from AI models. It offers a highly interactive, customizable, and easy-to-use solution for displaying real-time generated text with rich formatting. Built on top of Tailwind typography, it provides beautiful styling for headings, lists, and code blocks out of the box. It supports GitHub Flavored Markdown, adding tables, task lists, strikethrough, and autolinks for enhanced compatibility.
One of its standout features is the built-in caret indicator, which shows users that content is still being generated, providing a smooth streaming experience. It also handles unterminated block styling, parsing incomplete Markdown to display prettier streaming with smooth animations. Streamdown includes Shiki-powered syntax highlighting with copy and download buttons, language detection, and line numbers, making code blocks highly functional.
For technical content, it supports LaTeX math through KaTeX and interactive Mermaid diagrams with fullscreen viewing, as well as CJK support for correct ideographic punctuation. Security is a priority: it blocks images and links from unexpected origins and displays link safety modals that show the full URL before navigation to protect users.
