What is Lunacy?
Lunacy by Icons8 is a free, powerful graphic design software available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is the only design tool that natively opens and edits Sketch files, making it an indispensable asset for designers collaborating across platforms. With a built-in library of vectors, photos, UI kits, and icons, Lunacy accelerates the design process by providing ready-to-use assets directly within the app. Its intuitive interface mimics industry-standard tools, reducing the learning curve for newcomers and enhancing productivity for professionals.
Key features include a vector editing engine that supports boolean operations, gradients, and masks, along with a robust text tool for typography control. Lunacy also offers real-time collaboration, allowing multiple designers to work on the same file simultaneously, with changes synced instantly. The software includes a built-in screenshot tool and a color picker for quick asset extraction. For UI/UX design, Lunacy provides auto-layout, constraints, and prototyping capabilities, enabling designers to create interactive mockups without switching tools.
Use cases range from web and mobile app design to social media graphics and print materials. Design teams can leverage Lunacy’s cloud deployment option (Lunacy Cloud) to host projects on their own servers, ensuring data privacy and compliance with internal policies. This self-hosted solution is ideal for enterprises handling sensitive information. Technical details: Lunacy supports SVG, PNG, JPG, and PDF exports, and integrates with version control systems. It runs on 64-bit systems with minimal hardware requirements, making it accessible on older machines.
Benefits include cost savings (free), cross-platform compatibility, and seamless Sketch file handling, which eliminates the need for expensive licenses or file conversion tools. Lunacy is continuously updated with community-driven improvements, ensuring it stays relevant in a rapidly evolving design landscape.
